Services
- Counseling
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides the over-arching model of treatment. A team comprised of clinical, professional and direct care staff co-facilitate DBT groups using modules in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal relationships. Licensed clinicians provide individual therapy, DBT and "Seven Challenges," a substance abuse and prevention program. Youth counselors focus on daily functioning of youth in the treatment milieu and co-facilitate groups. Direct care staff co-facilitate psycho-educational groups focusing on anger management, moral reasoning and structured learning.
- Mental Health Services
-
Mental health treatment is provided to all youth. Youth receive a weekly clinical therapy session with a New York State-licensed social worker or psychologist. Youth requiring more intense mental health services are placed on a Mental Health (MH) caseload; these youth receive more frequent therapy sessions than the other youth. Youth are evaluated, assessed and treated by a licensed psychiatrist weekly for the MH cases, and periodically for all other cases.
- Education
-
The facility provides educational programming for youth in accordance with New York State Education Department requirements. The Committee on Special Education (CSE) addresses special education needs for classified students and Individual Education Programs (IEP’s) are developed for students with disabilities. State assessments and Regents exams are provided to eligible students. Qualifying youth may also enroll in the Alternative High School Education Programs and pursue a Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). Courses offered can be applied toward a high school diploma in the student’s community.
- Vocational Opportunities
-
Instructors provide skills training in basic computer use, keyboarding and Microsoft Office. Youth receive instruction in On-the-job Training, job readiness skills and portfolio development.
- Health Services
-
Comprehensive health services are provided by licensed health professionals. Medical staff are available on days and evenings seven days a week. Our medical team is comprised of a nurse administrator, registered nurses and a physician assistant who is supervised by an M.D.
Routine services offered are daily sick call, psychoeducation, labs, EKG’s, vital sign monitoring and addressing any ailment that does not require a higher level of care. Urgent issues are either referred to the P.A. or addressed through local emergency care. Eye care services are provided on site and dental care services are provided locally. Medical is also an integral part of release planning often referring and scheduling follow up care upon a youths return to their community.
- Recreational
-
Recreational programming is provided to encourage personal confidence, build self-esteem, support sportsman-like conduct and provide opportunities for productive use of leisure time. Recreational activities include physical fitness, sporting events, arts and crafts, hobbies, and games.
- Religious Services
-
Non-denominational services are offered periodically throughout each month. Religious practices are encouraged and supported throughout the program.
- Visitation
-
Families are vital to the treatment for youth in placement and are encouraged to visit on weekends. Family engagement is actively pursued through participation in support team meetings, family therapy sessions and facility-sponsored, on-site visits.
- Special Programs and Community Partnerships
-
Special programs at Taberg include a graphic arts printing program, cosmetology, music and culinary arts. The community advisory board donates gifts and hosts picnics. Volunteers from the community bring a multitude of experiences to the youth served at Taberg. Animals, traveling choirs, poets, veterans and others have contributed to the growth and development of our youth. Taberg has an enhancement program that allows youth to learn responsibility through the care and feeding of the animals. Youth also benefit from the unconditional affection they receive from the animals.
- Pre-Release Orientation
-
Release planning begins at intake. The facility support team members work closely with residents, parents and community service team members to ensure that youth and their families receive the support needed for a timely and successful return to the community.
