Fathers play key role in healthy child development

The Healthy Families New York Fatherhood Initiative recognizes how important dads are to the healthy growth and development of their children and the success of their family. The initiative promotes and encourages dads to get involved and to be an active part of their children’s lives.

What exactly is a “dad,” and why do dads matter so much in the lives of children? We define a “dad” as any man who is or wants to be actively involved in raising a child. This includes fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles and noncustodial fathers. Dads matter so much in the lives of their children, because studies show that children with involved, loving fathers have healthier self-esteem, are more likely to do well in school, and exhibit better social behaviors than those children who have uninvolved fathers.
