Wednesday, April 30, 2014 GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES $794 MILLION TO PROVIDE WORKING FAMILIES WITH AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced more than $794 million in child care subsidy funding, an increase of $55 million over last fiscal year, to address the widespread need among low-income working families for affordable child care. Prior to this year’s 7.45 percent increase, allocations for the New York State Child Care Block Grant (CCBG) have remained stable for the past five years.
Tuesday, April 29, 2014 100 Years and Counting On April 30, 2013, the New York State Commission for the Blind kicked off its centennial year with a special event featuring former Governor David A. Paterson as the keynote speaker. At that time, the Commission was still known as the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH). Several months later, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law legislation to officially change the name to the New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB).

Cuomo announced that $3 million is being made available to provide air conditioners to eligible low-income New Yorkers with documented medical conditions that are exacerbated by extreme heat. The Cooling Assistance Component of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) begins May 1.
Monday, April 21, 2014 GOVERNOR CUOMO REQUESTS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PULL DANGEROUS CHILDREN'S TOY FROM SHELVES Governor Andrew M. Cuomo urged the federal government to recall a toy known as “Clingy Darts,” which poses a significant danger to children. The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) found the children’s toy contains more than six times the federally allowable limit of the chemical phthalate Di(2-ethylhexyl), also known as DEHP.

Cuomo encouraged eligible low-income New Yorkers to take advantage of free income tax preparation and e-filing services at hundreds of sites across the state, with the April 15 filing deadline fast approaching. The Governor also highlighted a range of tax credits available that can put additional money in the pockets of low-income workers.

Cuomo announced a new tool that will help students and families interpret financial aid award letters from colleges and get bottom line costs before making a final decision. The Financial Aid Award Letter Comparison Tool, available at HESC.ny.gov, is free and safe to use, with no personal data collected or saved.

Wednesday, March 12, 2014 Important Notice for OCFS Staff in Western New York (see below for specific counties) In light of the weather conditions associated with today’s winter storm, State offices in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego, Wayne and Wyoming counties are closed as of 2pm. This includes the offices of the Attorney General, State Comptroller and State Education. A directed early departure for non-essential employees is hereby granted and employees are released from work without charge to credits. Essential employees should report to work as directed by management.

Among the topics discussed was the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). It is provided directly to the taxpayer, and is worth hundreds – even thousands - of dollars.

Cuomo has announced the 2014 Black History Month exhibit entitled, “The Transformative Power of the Narrative,” will be open beginning February 7. The exhibit, located in the War Room, is part of the State’s ongoing effort to create museum quality displays for public viewing at the State Capitol.

The Public Information Office (PIO) now maintains “NYS OCFS en Español,” or @NYSOCFS_espanol, from which tweets in Spanish are sent regularly.
Wednesday, January 15, 2014 OCFS DISTRIBUTES WINTER COATS AND ACCESSORIES TO NEW YORKERS IN NEED OCFS has announced a major donation to a Western N.Y. program that benefits children at a socioeconomic disadvantage who have an emergency need for clothing and supplies. The OCFS Buffalo Regional Office’s coat, toy, and school supply drive was held in direct response to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s call for donations this past holiday season.
