Governor Cuomo Proclaims September 2013 “School Attendance Awareness Month”
In recognition of the importance of regular school attendance on student achievement, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has declared September 2013 as “School Attendance Awareness Month” throughout New York State.
Chronic absence -- missing ten percent or more days of school for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences -- is a proven early predictor of academic underperformance.
Chronic absence widens the achievement gap that separates students in high needs areas from their peers and undermines efforts to improve struggling schools.
Governor Cuomo's proclamation encourages communities to begin the new school year with a strong message encouraging higher attendance levels.
