Governor Announces $6.9 Million in AmeriCorps Funding for Programs Increasing Economic Opportunity for New Yorkers
Funding will support 21 local and regional agencies statewide
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the approval of $6.9 million in federal funding to help reduce poverty, fight the opioid epidemic, boost economic opportunities, invigorate educational support and provide critical health services across New York State. The funding comes through The New York State Commission on National and Community Service and complements a $5.8 million AmeriCorps grant awarded to 11 agencies earlier this year.
"This critical funding will help provide stable housing for some of the most vulnerable among us, fighting the opioid epidemic and supporting our communities with health and educational services," Governor Cuomo said. "With this funding, we provide assistance to various agencies to invest in our communities, making them a safer and healthier place for New Yorkers to live and thrive."
The funding will help boost crucial programs with grants ranging from $42,000 to more than $1 million.
Linda Cohen, Executive Director of the NYS Commission on National and Community Service said, "The commission is glad to be able to direct resources and provide support to address some of the most urgent issues of our time, such as assistance for those battling substance use disorders and protecting the most vulnerable people who live and work in our communities. We are firm believers in volunteerism and building stronger communities by lifting people up."
Congressman José E. Serrano said, "AmeriCorps and the organizations it supports are crucial for areas like the Bronx. Thanks to this funding, more than a dozen state and local organizations doing great work in New York will have access to the resources they need to continue having an impact and making a difference in the life of Bronxites. As a member of the Appropriations committee, I will continue fighting to ensure programs like AmeriCorps have access to the funding they need to do their job."
Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez said, "Investing in community initiatives that benefit working families is an invaluable way to bolster local economies and enrich lives. I’’m particularly pleased to see funds to increase New York City’’s commitment to fight the opioid crisis, strengthen communities such as Sunset Park and Cypress Hills and invest in our children’’s education."
Congressman Brian Higgins said, "National and community service funding is at risk of complete elimination under federal budget proposals put forth by the White House. This federal funding will go a long way here in Western New York and demonstrates the important role national service plays in filling gaps in housing, education, health related needs in local communities."
Congressman Adriano Espaillat said, "I commend Governor Cuomo on today’’s announcement of $6.9 million in AmeriCorps funding, which will be a tremendous boost to our efforts to address persistent poverty, fight the staggering opioid crisis, provide health services and create economic and educational opportunities for New York through greater services across the state."
