MIGRATING NETWORK SHARES, LOCAL INSTALLED SOFTWARE, AND USER PROFILES

Some of the final things you will need to do to complete your migration to your new CONNECTIONS workstation include reestablishing your mapped network drives, installing local applications software that has been tested and approved for use on the new Windows 2000 CONNECTIONS workstation, and removing your roaming profile if still in use.

Network Shares

Identifying Your Network Shares

Other than the standard mapped network drives (H: - K:), you may have had a need to make a permanent connection to other network shared drives. If this is the case you will need to note the network location of that share and re-map it on your new workstation.

The following steps must be performed on your old CONNECTIONS workstation while logged in with your NYSDSSALB or NYSDSSNYC Userid.

  1. Startup 'File Manager' by double-clicking on its icon.
  2. Click on the Drive dropdown box.
  3. Note the path listed for each network drive other than those for H: - K:. The network path is in the format \\Server Name\Share Name (e.g. \\U2BDC\InfoOFIS).

Creating Network Shares on Your New Workstation

Now that you have noted network shares that you require you will need to map and connect to them on your new workstation.

The following steps must be performed on your new CONNECTIONS workstation while logged in with your NYSDSSALB or NYSDSSNYC Userid.

  1. Right click on the 'My Network Places' icon on your desktop.
  2. Click on Map Network Drive…
  3. Select a drive letter (the one you noted on your old workstation, if available) for your mapped network share in the Drive dropdown box.
  4. Enter the path you noted for this network share from your old workstation in the format \\Server Name\Share Name (e.g. \\U2BDC\InfoOFIS) in the Folder dropdown box. You may have to supply a password if one was given to you for this particular share.

Perform this for each network share that you need to map.

Installation of Approved Local Applications

Generally, you were not allowed to install additional programs on your old CONNECTIONS workstations. However, procedures did allow for this to be done in certain circumstances when the need was justified and the software tested against the CONNECTIONS workstation build and the CONNECTIONS application.

First off, only those programs that were previously approved by CONNECTIONS State Central Administration for installation on a CONNECTIONS workstation can be considered for installation on the new workstation. In addition, that software needs to be tested and approved for use in the new Windows 2000 environment. Though that software ran in a Windows NT 3.51 environment it may not run, run poorly, or cause problems running in a Windows 2000 environment.

User Profiles

Removing Roaming Profiles

As part of the CONNECTIONS rollout of new Windows 2000 workstations all remaining CONNECTIONS users who have not already discontinued the use of the 'Roaming Profile' must have it removed to use the new environment.

If you determine by the procedure given below that you are still using a 'Roaming Profile' contact your local Security Coordinator who will reconfigure your Userid to use 'Local Profiles' with the Webstar program.

This process must be performed on your new CONNECTIONS workstation while logged in with your NYSDSSALB or NYSDSSNYC Userid.

  1. Right click on the 'My Network Places' icon on your desktop.
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. Click on the User Profiles tab.
  4. Find your Userid in the listing (will be in the form NYSDSSALB\<Your Userid> or NYSDSSNYC\<Your Userid>) and note from the 'Type' column whether it was 'Local' or 'Roaming'. If Roaming contact you're your local Security Coordinator to have it changed.
