New York State Office of Children and Family Services Industry Residential Center Students Uncover Potential Careers with Roadtrip Nation Curriculum

ROCHESTER, NY – Every high school student, no matter what the situation, has passions and interests that are unique to them. Roadtrip Nation helps young people connect what they are naturally interested in – whether it is playing video games, reading mystery novels, or catching bugs in their backyard – to a potential career down the road. Today, Roadtrip Nation, a career exploration organization and educational TV documentary series, announced that with AT&T Aspire funding they are coming to New York.

AT&T Aspire’s support of Roadtrip Nation underpins the company’s goal to help students graduate from high school prepared for college and the workforce. An important part of that is for students to understand what career options are available to them and discover that their passion could lead to a job!

“AT&T Aspire is committed to helping students graduate from high school knowing how to get to their next steps in life, Roadtrip Nation provides students with this map,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York President, AT&T. “I am thrilled that students at New York State Office of Children and Family Services Industry Residential Center will benefit from the Roadtrip Nation tour and curriculum this year. This is the beginning of the road and we can’t wait to see where they go from here!"

Roadtrip Nation provides tools to help students connect the dots between their personal interests and real world opportunities. Through the program, students see firsthand how what they learn in the classroom today can become a future career. AT&T Aspire, the company's signature education initiative, contributed $1.5 million to Roadtrip Nation this year, which will extend its program offerings to 15,000 students in twelve states, including New York. With a targeted goal to help empower youth at risk of not graduating, the program aims to encourage students to overcome their current obstacles and pave their own professional paths.

AT&T representatives joined Roadtrip Nation on Monday, April 6 at New York State Office of Children and Family Services Industry Residential Center in Rush, NY to announce the adoption of the Roadtrip Nation Experience curriculum this year. This kickoff event begins to bring career exploration to life with captivating speakers and interactive activities. This is only the first step in engaging and exciting students about their upcoming Roadtrip Nation Experience that they will have in their classroom.

“The heart of our curriculum is to allow students to map their interests to future pathways in life,” said Mike Marriner, Co-Founder of Roadtrip Nation. “With AT&T's support, we are able to deliver this valuable program to students in New York and we look forward to seeing how these youth will shape our future.”

The curriculum engages students in self-reflection exercises to help identify their interests. Roadtrip Nation’s vast interview archive, which contains video interviews with hundreds of successful real-world leaders spanning every industry, allows students to learn the steps each of these leaders took that to bring them to where they are today. Throughout the curriculum, students connect to an online student community where they can share their projects and connect with like-minded peers who share similar goals from across the country.

“Each and every day OCFS’s dedicated staff work with the youth in our care to help them grow and create opportunities to allow them to learn important skills where they can gain confidence and positively contribute to their communities,” said OCFS Acting Commissioner Roberto Velez. “Partnerships with Roadtrip Nation and AT&T offer our youth tremendous benefits and allow them to explore the potential success that they can strive for. We are grateful for the opportunity to work together on this important initiative.”

During the interactive, educational event, the students heard stories from the road by the presenters, participated in exercises that lead students through a process of exploring their interests, and illustrate how they can connect those interests to their studies, their communities, and their futures, learned How research and conduct a cold-call to a leader in students’ field of interest and learned interview best practices in Live On-Stage Interviews. The students were also invited to tour the Roadtrip Nation RV that the presenters travel the country on to conduct these events.
