"It's All in the KARDS" Video to inform staff in nursing homes

“It’s All in the KARDS”
Using ARRA funds designated for Independent Living Older-Blind, the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH) recently partnered with the NYS Office for the Aging Long-term Care Ombudsman Program to develop a video to inform staff in nursing homes about the effects of vision loss and accommodations which can help residents who are legally blind be more independent and participate more fully in activities. The video, “Working with Older Legally Blind Adults,” and a companion poster, “It’s All in the KARDS” were produced by the SUNY Professional Development Program (PDP). Staff from CBVH, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Goodwill Industries, Inc. (ABVI) of Rochester, several Directors of Nursing , and Ombudsman Coordinators provided input into the development of the video.
“KARDS” is an acronym for the five key points of the video:
1.       Know the effects and causes of vision loss.
2.       Always identify yourself to the resident when you enter the room, and tell them when you are leaving.
3.       Return things to where they were.
4.       Describe what you are doing, and the surroundings.
5.       Share helpful devices and strategies whenever possible.
Ombudsman Coordinators received training in July. Each coordinator also received a curriculum, a resource book and a kit of sample adaptive devices to use when training volunteers and nursing home staff.  Posters, which highlight the five key points, will be provided for posting in the nursing homes as a reminder to staff. The video is on CBVH’s website (www.visionloss.ny.gov) and will also be available on the Ombudsman site (www.ltcombudsman.ny.gov). It may be downloaded for use by anyone working or living with older individuals experiencing vision loss.
